Hello, my name is Gayle Triller, and I am the new County Coordinator for this KYGenWeb site. Please  feel free to contact me at any time.

Anyone interested in adopting a Kentucky county, please contact Sherri Hall Bradley, KYGenWeb State Coordinator.

History of the County

McCreary county was formed in 1912 from Whitley, Wayne, and Pulaski County. The County was Named for Governor James B. McCreary (from 1875 to 1879.)About the Governor. It became Kentucky's one hundred twentieth, and final county in order of formation. The county is located in south-central Kentucky between the Big South Fork and the main body of the Cumberland River. Whitley City is the county seat.

As of 2000, the population was 17,080. Its county seat is Whitley City. It is the only Kentucky county that does not have a single incorporated city. Because of this, county government is the sole local government agency for the entire county. The majority of the county is owned by the federal government, and is managed by the Daniel Boone National Forest and the National Park Service.
