MOUNT MINISH Cemetery

[aka Minish & Gratz Cemetery]

Owen County Cemetery #15. LOCATION: In Gratz on the north side of east US 22. Just inside the city limits turn north on a paved lane marked "Cemetery Road," and proceed to the top of the hill. The cemetery is surrounded by a chain link fence but enough room to park and turn around. TYPE: Ridge, has remained in limited use since the Civil War. CONDITION: Attended and well cared for given the degree of difficulty. Some damage from stones being pushed over, which range from field stones to monuments. Many unmarked graves and unreadable stones.

I copied this cemetery in late afternoon light and couldn't read everything. Many of the children's stones were small and faint to begin with, now badly sugared. Several fine granite markers were toppled face down and impossible to move. I'd guess 50 to 100 unmarked graves here. Seems to have been the graveyard in this area where the Union soldiers were buried. The Confederates chose Carter cemetery, several miles to the north of this location.
