Posted 07/15/2020 Surname: Wolfe

I am looking for birth records, parents and siblings names, etc. for my grandfather, John William Wolfe, born Oct 5, 1892 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. His mother died when he was a small child and was given to other family members to raise. When he was old enough he joined the military and never returned to Kentucky. My mother and her siblings never knew who their father’s family were. My grandfather died when he was only 42 years old and never talked about his family because of the deep hurt he carried with him after his mother had died and his father had given him up. His father had remarried and had more children and this just deepened the hurt, feeling like his father had just forgotten him, which he had. So, my mother and her siblings never had the chance to speak with him about his family with them all being so young and losing him so soon. I appreciate any help or assistance you can give me. Thanks, Debbie Dehner

Posted 03/08/2018 Surname: Morgan/Gibson/Johnston

My brick wall is finding documentation on a death date for a DAR application for my great grandmother, Serelda/Zerelda Morgan Gibson,
daughter of Milton Morgan and Sara Kelso Morgan, who is buried in the Salem Baptist Church cemetery in Owen County,Ky.  Serelda was the great-granddaughter of William "Preacher" Morgan and the granddaughter of John Morgan. There is no tombstone for her in the cemetery. My deceased cousin (the Gibson line) had her death date listed in her family research papers as July 8, 1903 and has noted that the dates on the paper were taken from a family Bible which cannot now be located.  1903 was prior to Ky. Vital Statistic reporting and there are no film copies of the local newspapers for 1903.  Serelda's father Milton died while she and her brother John Brad Morgan were very young (around 1853 or 1854) and her mother Sarah "Sallie Ann" remarried Henry P. Johnston. Henry P and Sarah were still
living in Owen County according to the 1880 census; however Henry P. is buried in Pleasureville. I am unsure where Sarah is buried.  Henry P. and Sarah had six children together.  I am hoping that someone in the Morgan or Johnston family has a newspaper clipping or a recording in a family Bible of Serelda's death date that I can get a copy of. Thank you, Sandra Bush, bush_jim@bellsouth.net

Posted 02/10/2018 Surname: Sinclair

My 3ggg-grandfather, Bartlett Mason (1780-1861), married Elizabeth Sinclair (1782-1852) about 1799 in Stafford County, Virginia and migrated to Kentucky with several children around 1812 and settled on Eagle Creek two or three miles upstream from Lusby’s Mill, which until 1819 was in Scott County. Although searching for nearly 40 years, I have never been able to determine the parents of my 3ggg-grandmother, Elizabeth. I believe that she may have had Sinclair siblings in Scott County that may have settled there a few years before she and Bartlett arrived. When Elizabeth died of Cholera in 1852 she was in Scott County perhaps there visiting relatives, because Bartlett was still in the Lusby’s Mill area of Owen County at the time of Elizabeth's death. Posted 11/05/2014 Surnames: Walker/Perry

My Aunt Vern Hutchison,  (Vesta Vern Hutchison 1914-1989) an avid genealogist, received information from Mrs. Patricia Green Wolcott, per Vern’s letter in 1980, in reference to Millia Ann Perry Street.  Her father was Anthony Perry; her mother Nancy Walker.  Nancy’s father was Nathaniel Walker. The information she put on chart was:  Millia Ann Perry, 1828-1908, Salvisa KY (later Granby, Mo)

Parents: Anthony Perry 1802-1827 deceased in KY (death year one year before Millia was born,? My question)   He married Nancy Walker 1800-1849, deceased in KY

Father of Nancy Walker, Nathanial Walker, B; circa 1775?.  Deceased 1838 in KY (his wife Melissa Smith)

Millia (or Milly on marriage license) married William Stirman Street October 18, 1844 in KY.    Millia, age 16, William, age 25 on marriage date.   Millia is my  gggrandmother.

Problem:    We cannot verify on the web….Anthony Perry/Nancy Walker/Nathanial Walker

Another perplexity….in a letter (1980) to my mother, Vern made a comment that  “One Sylvanus Walker was the brother of our great grandmother, Millia Ann Perry Street.”       I assume perhaps Sylvanus Walker would be a child of Nathanial and Melissa Walker.  However I cannot find a Sylvanus (many of those) in the age range of Millia.

I have found on   Find A Grave, William Street 1819-1898, Missouri, and Millia.    It seems they had 9 children per other records.

All of our charts and what I have found on web, comes to a grinding halt when we try to search past Millia.   My “brick wall” and any help will be appreciated. Judy Scarbrough  hajude9@sbcglobal.net

My original search began with my great grandfather's surname, "Philo"   The family Bible lists Raymond Philo, Sr.'s  mother as only, "Martha".  Recently I came across a death certificate for a Mary Philo Oliver.  Her parents were listed as Raymond Philo and her mother's last name appears to be "Lafe".  I am having a difficult time finding that surname.  I can't seem to find it listed as a slave owner's surname either. I'm guessing that Martha Lafe was born into slavery abt. 1854. Any help would really be appreciated! Linda Gross, Lindgros824@aol.com

I'm trying to identify the parents of Isham George Smith.  Our family and census information about him says that he was born in Owen County, KY in 1817 and that both of his parents were born in NC.  There were only a few Smiths in 1820 census for Owen Co & only 3 of those showed children under 9.   But I've not been able to show that any of those 3 candidates came from NC.   By 1840 Isham was in Indiana, where he married Elizabeth Green.  Family of John Sanders Smith is a close match in birth dates and
movements but this family doesn't come from NC according to records on Ancestry.   Many/most of the early KY settlers from this time period were Rev. War veterans with land grants but I've not gotten anywhere with that idea either. HELP PLEASE! Ron York, ryorkgen@gmail.com

My grandmother and grandfather owned a farm in Owenton in the 40's and 50's - possibly early 60's.  Their name is Beckham Jones and Minnie B. Jones.  I visited there as a child and want to take my children there,
if it is still standing.  They both worked at a mental institution in Louisville and would come home for the weekends.  I remember it being on a narrow two lane, hilly road, with no houses visible on either side.
There was a barn about 1/2 block away on the same side of the road.  I remember a restaurant on the top of a hill called Pat's (I think) that had homemade pies.  You had to get there early to get the pie because
they sold out!  I hope someone might remember my grandfather and grandmother.  I apologize for not having more information but any help will be greatly appreciated! Yolanda Valadez, yvaladez1102@sbcglobal.net

As I get further and further back in my genealogy searching I am learning, or at least it looks like, a couple of my maternal ancestral lines trace back to the early days of Owen Co., KY, especially in the Lusby Mill area.  I believe that the William Jones for whom  Cobbs Mill was built [according to the Lusby Mill website] was my maternal great, great great grandfather.  And, again according to the online history the Mill was named for his father-in-law Samuel Cobb.  Samuel’s daughter was Dilla or Deliah Cobb [Williams’s wife, and my great, great, great, grandmother].  I am hoping to find connections to others of their descendants still living in or around the Lusby Mill area.  And another one of my lines also descends from that same family.  A son of Samuel Cobb was Thomas Cobb who married Priscilla Smith. They had a daughter, Lucy Cobb, who married Pleasant Jones [son of William Jones and Deliah Cobb.  So this gets a little complicated.
I think that Thomas Cobb and Deliah Cobb were brother and sister, and therefore Lucy Cobb and Pleasant Jones were 1st cousins.  It is through Lucy Cobb and Pleasant Jones that my line descends.  They moved to Jennings Co., IN, and had a daughter named Eliza Jones, who married a John Davis [who is actually one of my big “brick wall” problems.]  I’m thinking his family may have originally come from Owen County, KY also.  From IN my family moved to southern Iowa and Nebraska and then eventually to California.  If anyone still in or around the Lusby Mill area has more information on this family I would love to make contact with them. Thanks for any help, Chere (Glaze) Negaard, cherejohn@earthlink.net As an addition to the above query, can anyone tell me who the Davis family was that owned the farm, on which the "Old Jackson Graveyard" was?  Supposedly that's where Samuel Cobb is buried.

I have posted before but the info I'm finding from other family trees on ancestry.com isn't adding up. Other
than the census, I can't find any concrete evidence of their family relationships, vital records, dates, etc

1) Still looking for concrete info on Benjamin Robinson and Margaret Cobb. DAR.org has birth and death dates all over the place. I would still like to know more about their daughter Delilah.

2) I found more info on Isaac Ingram's parents: John Ingram was from Delaware and Elizabeth Faulkner/Fortner was the daughter of Robert Fortner and may have died in 1838. It appears John Ingram married again according to the 1860 census in Owen Co. and had another family. Not 100% sure it's the same John Ingram, but he was from Delaware as well.

3) Can't seem to find more about John Ingram being from Delaware, so any help would be wonderful. Any help will really be appreciated! Jeanette A., cadgirl316[at]hotmail.com

I was looking through the Kentucky, Owen County, District 2 Census for 1850.   I was originally looking to see who was living near John Morgan, wife Minerva, and their two sons; Jasper and Newton.  I started at page one to go through the whole census for District 2 to see if I could find the Smoot family... when on page 3, I ran into something very interesting! On page 3 is listed Boswell Meeks and his wife, Polly.  Supposedly Minerva's parents name that married John Morgan...  BUT, there are 3 girls living with Boswell at this time; Minerva, 22; Mary, 19; and Nancy, 16. I went back to relook at John Morgan on page 79.. His wife Minerva was listed as 21 yrs old. All this time I thought Minerva's maiden name was Meeks, and I have a feel that many other out there, thought the same!  So.... whose daughter is this that John Morgan's married? There are a lot of Hughes around at that time, John was living near a Lewis Morgan and wife, Harriett; which I assume is his brother.  Is Minerva's real name Minerva Hughes?! Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Beth Holcomb, bethholcomb73@gmail.com

Posted 08/3/2011 Surnames: Hughes, Davis

My G-Grandfather, John William HUGHES had nine siblings. Been trying to trace each of the siblings forward to modern day. I know that several them married individuals named DAVIS. My grandmother's ancestors also married in the DAVIS family. One name continues to crop up in my research on UNOFFICIAL sources, the name is: BRACK DAVIS. I have searched death records, marriage records, birth records, any official record I can find for a BRACK DAVIS, but have been unable to locate anything. The Owen County DAVIS individuals seemed to have a love of naming their children with INITIALS, which probably stood for something to them, but officially, they were just initials. For instance my G-grandfather's sister, Catherine 'Kate' HUGHES married JOHN C. B. DAVIS.  I have often wondered if this is the 'mysterious' BRACK DAVIS referred to so often on unofficial soruces. The era would be roughly 1845-1945.  Wondering if anyone has run across any 'official reference' to BRACK DAVIS during their research. Thanks. Judi Fryer

Looking for the ancestors and decedents of Andrew Bennett, Andrew was born in Kentucky possibly in Owens County in 1801. He came to Indiana with parents and settled in Jennings County, Indiana, Montgomery Township   (1830 Federal Census) and later moved to Decatur County (1840 Federal Census). Andrew married Catharine “Kitty” Osborn in Jennings County, Indiana on 15 March 1828. Kitty was born in Owens County, Kentucky on 28 May 1811. They had the following children all born in Indiana: William Strawder (1829), Minerva (1830), James Ellison (1832), Henry William (1834), Jesse Franklin (1836), Nancy (1838), James A (1840), John A
(1841) & Twins Mary Emma. and Sarah Caroline.(1845). I believe Kitty Bennett died after the twins were born. Family came to Hancock County, Illinois about 1846, Kitty was not in 1850 Federal Census of Hancock County with family.  I believe the William Bennett found in 1840 Federal Census of Jennings County, Indiana to be the father of Andrew Bennett.   Also in same census was John Osborn (same page) I believe to be the father of Kitty Osborn, both men were of the same age group 60-70. I believe the following persons to be possible brothers of Andrew Bennett.   They were found in the 1830 -1840 Federal Census of Jennings and Decatur
Counties in Indiana:  J.C. Bennett (abt. 1790), I.D. Bennett (abt. 1795),  John Bennett (abt. 1799), William (1803), Harry Bennett (1805), and James K. Bennett (1807). I was recently sent a photo album that contain  some pictures of a school labeled K.F.C. One picture is of a building labeled Parrish Hall and a picture of 3 young woman labeled 3 Roomates in 19 Pinkerton. I know the Pinkerton name has a connection to the college. Another picture is labeled 1917-1918 Freshman class and our teacher Mrs. ?Joe or Zoe? Ethel Smith. My grandmother was Nora Josephine Anderson born June 02, 1902. Her family lived in Lexington in 1915 but she had family from Owen, Scott and the Peak's Mill area in Franklin.
I was just wondering if K.F.C. I wondered if it meant Ky Female Orphanage or Ky Franklin County something.

Do any members of the Bales family still live in Owen County?  My ggg-grandparents, David Bales (1833-1916) and his wife Lavinia Hamilton (1833-1911), settled in Owen Co., KY sometime between 1866 and 1870, and
I know that some of their descendants were still living on their farm, in the house that David built, in the 1980s when my grandfather (one of David and Lavinia's great-grandchildren) took me there for a visit. Unfortunatly all I remember is that whoever these cousins were they were connected to Sherman (David and Lavinia's youngest son) and possibly Sherman's son Roy Bales.  Anyway, I've just been contacted by another descendant of David and Lavinia Hamilton Bales (a grandson of their son Charles Byron Bales) who visited that same farm in the 1960s (he's pretty sure Roy Bales was living there at that time), and we'd both like to see if we can find out if any of the Bales family still live in or around Owen County and then get in touch with them.  Thanks for the help. I am interested in any info on my maternal great-great grandfather Michael Denney (1819-1890’s) who lived in Owen Co. (the 1883 atlas has him living near Gratz).  He was an Irishman and married Martha Ann Spurr from Clark County.  They had two daughters, Mary and Martha.  Martha was married to Joseph A. Marion, and they had three children who lived to adulthood: Anderson, Beatrice and Francis.  That family seemed to shuttle across the river to Henry County and back on several occasions.  Joseph Marion’s father was Anderson Marion from Wise, VA. by way of Owsley County KY. Thank you, Freddie Lockett lockettf@bardstown.com

McCOY/MARSHALL/JOHNSON
My Great Grandmother Alice McCoy (possibly Mary Alice McCoy) was born in 1870, Owenton, Ky per my Grandmother's birth certificate & Alice's Death Certificate/Obituary.  Her parents were Thomas McCoy & Eliza Marshall (possibly Elizabeth as that is my Grandmother's middle name). She married Samuel Johnson (or William Samuel Johnson) - I give these options in names simply because of all of the stories I've heard.  She left KY in 1899-1900 and moved to East Liverpool, OH - this is as far as I've got. I've found her in OH census records, but cannot locate her anywhere in what is available in the KY census.  To say I'm ready to pull my hair out is an understatement.  Any info is greatly appreciated. Hughes / Morgan / Fogle

Re:  Cynthia Hughes, Cynthia Morgan, Cynthia Fogle. Daughter of :  Joseph and Sarah Hale Hughes. DOB:  Between 1857 and 1860 - Owen County, Probably New Columbus

Believe Cynthia Hughes first married Benjamin Franklin Morgan.  But have not dates, no documentation, and no names of any children, except possibly 'Weary Morgan'.

I have a death certificate for a Cynthia 'Fogle', which I believe COULD be the same Cynthia Hughes, showing that she was married to 'Jasper Fogle' at the time of her death and was buried in Highland Cemetery.  However, the birth year appears to be a year or so off and the mother's name is listed as 'unknown' and the father's name is listed as 'Thomas Hughes', which would be
incorrect.  The death notice in the KY Post for Cynthia Fogle had no information about children or spouse, only DOD.  The DOB on the Cynthia Fogle death certificate was 10/28/1859, age 68, 5 mo, 14 days, DOD:  April 12, 1928.  This death certificate could be for an entirely different individual. The little bit of personal genealogical information I have from my
now-deceased family was that Cynthia Hughes married Ben Morgan.Have not been able to find any information on Benjamin Morgan either.

Cynthia was listed on the 1880 census as being age 22.  She had many brothers and sisters, including:  John William Hughes, Silas P. Hughes, Granville Hughes, Mary Francis 'Franki' Hughes Ireland, Katherine C. Hughes Davis, Nancy 'Nannie' Ellen Hughes Works, George Samuel Hughes, Augustus 'Gus' Hughes, Rebecca Ann Hughes Works.

Appreciate any information on children, spouse(s), residence(s), death/burial, etc. Thank you, Judi Fryer justalady21@alltel.net

Turner / Bledsoe

I'm again seeking information on the life and family of Samuel Turner.  On 26 October 1837 he married Mrs. Eliza Kemper Bledsoe, widow of Wm. H. Bledsoe, and mother of three children:  Sarah Elizabeth, William J., and Mary Jane Bledsoe. In May 1838, Samuel Turner made three $200.00 bonds for his step-children in
Carroll County.  The securities on all three of those bonds were Greenup Baker and John P. Tandy.  An inventory of the estates of all three Bledsoe children was then recorded on 3 June 1839, again in Carroll County. According to tax records, however, Samuel Turner continued to reside in Owen Co., KY through the early 1840s.  He disappears, however, at some point prior to the birth of an illegitimate daughter (born to his step-daughter Mary Jane Bledsoe) on 16 December 1846 in Poplar Grove. I've found some indication that he may have also been associated (and perhaps related to?) one or more of the following Turners:  John V., Joseph B., Edward, and Richard R.  There is also a possibility that he might be connected to the Samuel Turner who married Julia Van Pelt in Gallatin Co., KY in 1813.  Any help on Samuel Turner will be much appreciated.  Thanks for the help. Wilhoite

In checking information on the Wilhoite Family I found a deed that Joshus Wilhoite, son of John W and Lucy Stapp, deeded land with his brother to the Christian Church at Ephesis.  28 Aug. 1838. Is this now El Bethal Church? I know Norville S Wilhoite and wife Alymira Jane Wilhoite are buried at El Bethal; It goes on to say Willis Wilhoite and Joel Duke were trustees of the
Ephesis that Joshua and wife Polly deeded. Interesting comment in the deed was the church would be open to all denominations when not in use by the Christian Church. Any help would be appreciated, Winifred Miller, winnie.miller@att.net

Smith

The earliest record I found in Owen Co KY for my brick-wall ancestor, 3rd great-grandmother Agnes (maiden name unknown) Smith, was in Court Order Book D, 1839, regarding 3 of her sons being bound out to neighbors Lilburn(?) Roberts, William H. Smither, and Nathaniel Searcy. Agnes Smith is head of house in 1840 and 1850 census. I assume her husband died sometime around 1839, but have no confirmation.  An indenture document dated 1861 in deed book at the Court House indicates she was deceased by then and had an outstanding loan on some property. Other parties involved are "heirs of Jno Boots", Sidney Smith Rowlett,
and Andrew Carter.  But I could find no record of the original purchase of the property, nor can I find anything about who her husband was. I think this is the same 50 acres that was sold by John W. Smith (son of Agnes) 28 May 1864, to George Smoot.  It is said to be bounded by the lands of Madison and B. F. (or T.) Kemper on Clay Lick Creek. Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Does anybody knowledge of where some of these people lived, helping me to pinpoint exactly where Agnes lived, perhaps near other Smith relatives? Thanks, Judy Davison, judyadavison@yahoo.com

May 1893 and Linden (believe this is Fletcher "L", your grandfather) b. July 1899.

Switzer

Hi, I'm just starting to research my great-great grandparents, I believe they were from Owen Co.  Their children's names (my great grandparents) were Buford "Boots" Switzer and Maggie B. (Wright) Switzer. Any information would be wonderful.  Thank you, Kristi Switzer Chandler, kristik@wkybb.net
