Zion Church - 1850

In Lee County, 6 miles south of Beattyville; constituted about 1850.

A letter dated June 24, 1922 from H.P. Brandenburg, a member of the church says in substance: "My mother is now 78 years old, a daughter of Rev. H.P. Hall, who for years was a pillar of Zion Church. She remembers the church as far back as 1856. It was known then as a mregular anti-missionary church but about 1865 it became known as a missionary Baptist church. Rev. John D. Spencer was pastor from 1856 to about 1865.

He was succeeded by Rev. Joseph Ambrose and he was succeeded by Rev. John Ward, and then Rev. J.J. Edwards was pastor for a while. The first meetinghouse was erected or owned by the church was built in 1897; first Sunday School was organized in 1900. The church affiliated with Booneville Assn. until they were received into Boone's Creek Assn.

In Aug. 1897 R.L. Brandenburg resigned as clerk, and H.S. Brandenburg was appointed clerk. At the same time messengers were appointed to Booneville Assn.

In April 1898 Charles Brandenburg elected clerk.

In May 1898 Harlan Brandenburg and John Hall were ordained deacons.

Rev. A.G. Coker seems to have been pastor from 1897 to Aug. 1898, when Elder J.G. Parsons accepted the care of the church.

Elder G.B. Johnson was called as pastor in June 1899.

In Sept. 1899 Bro. R.L. Brandenburg ordained to the ministry.

In Dec. 1899 Rev. S.E. Whipley became pastor and served until Aug. 1901. When he resigned, Elder W.T. Martin accepted the pastorate; he served one year.

Zion Church was received into Boone's Creek Assn. in 1904, at which time they reported 72 members.

Elder C.A. Dogger was pastor from April 1903 to Jan. 1904.

In Aug. 1905 Elder C.T. Brookshire accepted the pastorate, remaining about 1 year.

In Feb. 1907 Elder J.G. Parsons again became pastor.

In Aug. 1907 R.L. Brandening was modererator of the business meeting.

In June 1911 Rev. J.I. Wills was pastor of Beattyville Church and accepted the care of Zion Church for once a month preaching.

On Nov. 22, 1919 Zion Baptist Church was reorganized by Rev. J.T. Turpin and H.P. Brandenburg elected clerk. Charles hall and Charles Brandenburg put on trial for deacons.

In Nov. 1920 Rev. T.P. Edwards became pastor but served only a few months.

In April 1923 the church decided to move the old house and rebuild at Fish Creek, but this plan was abandoned.

In Oct 1921 Rev. J.W. Mahan, pastor of Beattyville Church accepted care of the church, preaching one Sunday each month, his salary being supplemented by Boone's Creek Assn. and the State Board.

In Dec 1921 the church voted to abandon the old church and worship in the school house on Fish Creek.

In Jan. 1922 the church elected E Ray as deacon.

In March 1922 it agreed to build a new meeting house.

The church now (1923) has 76 members.

The new church was completed by July 1923.
