Hannah Baird, 64, Florence

Mrs. Hannah Hume Baird, 64 of Florence, champion of women, political activist and community leader passed away of esophageal cancer on March 31, 2004, at her home. She was born in 1939 in Sterns, Ky., a company town in McCreary County, to C. Whitman and Hattie P. Hume. Her father was the editor of the local newspaper and the school superintendent.
She graduated from Sullins Junior College for Women in Virginia and the University of Kentucky, she married fellow UK student Glenn F. Baird in 1958. When he later attended the University of Louisville medical school, she taught in the Jefferson County school system.
They lived in North Carolina while her husband served in the Marines at Camp Le-jeune, after moving to Florence in 1964, Mrs. Baird became involved in philanthropy. Her driving force was her father, he had been poor when he was young, and he felt his life had been saved by education. He worked very hard to try to improve the lives of the coal miner’s children in the county by providing them education, Hannah wanted nothing more than to be like daddy, have influence on people, her sister said.
Ms. Hume said her sister wanted justice, especially for women. She had been “a really good housewife, cook, gardnerer, but she was very affected by the women’s liberation movement. That’s how she kind of started out, she had a very strong will, had her opinions, and she wasn’t afraid to tell anyone”.
Mrs. Baird was instrumental in developing, the Dinsmore Homestead Foundation, which is a preserved 1842 Boone County pioneer farm. She loved history, when the Dinsmore family was trying to deceide what to do with the homestead, Hannah got very involved with the family. She became friends with Martha Breasted (a fifth-generation descendant of James Dinsmore, the original owner). She stirred up the enthusiam of everybody else to form the Foundation. I think Dinsmore was her favorite place.
She was an organizer and advisor for Kentucky’s Demo-cratic Party; a founding member and chairwoman of the nonpartisan Kentucky Women’s Political Caucus; a member and chair of the Kentucky Comm-ission on Women; chair of Congressman Ken Lucas’s 1990s election and re-election campaigns for the Boone County Bicentennial Comm-ission.
She served as a member of the National Advisory Council on Economic Opportunity in the Carter administration. In 1978, she was an Enquirer Woman of the Year. In, March the Ken-tucky Commission on Women added her portrait to the Kentucky Women Remembered collection on display at the state Capitol. Mrs. Baird will be honored with the Lifetime Advocate Award in an April 21 ceremony by the Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky Award panel.
Mrs. Baird’s father, Whitman Hume was a descendent of the Hand Family that were large land owners in Morgan. The Hand Family Cemetery is behind the Morgan Cemetery, which was formed in 1901 when the Hand family and a couple other families donated land to create the Morgan Cemetery. Mrs. Baird’s father and mother are buried there.
Survivors include her husband; son, Glenn W., of Char-lotte, N.C., and daughter, Hannah E., also of Charlotte.
A graveside service was held on April 3, 2004 at the Hume Family Cemetery, section of Morgan Cemetery, Pendleton County, Ky., by Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
