Bernice L. Yelton, 81, Cold Spring

Bernie Sullivan met Wilbur "Deac" Yelton at the Cincinnati Art Academy in early 1946. By December, they were married. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on December 16, cut short three months due to her death on September 16, 2006.

Bernie and Deac lived a vagabond artist's life, living in a trailer in Florida, until Bernie became pregnant with their first child. They came back home to Kentucky, bought a house in Cold Spring, then set about the business of raising a family along with myriad vegetables.

Bernie began raising her own plants from seed, trying new varieties each year. The excess vegetables led to a sign at the road which Cold Spring area residents eagerly looked for: "Tomatoes" For years after she was unable to raise these treasured gems, people would stop to see if she had any to sell.

For the major part of her life, Bernie continued to paint landscapes and portraits. She could not get anyone to sit for the duration required to produce a portrait, so she would use pictures or a mirror to paint herself, resulting in numerous self-portraits. After she learned to drive, she could be seen pulled off a Campbell County road, capturing the surrounding landscape on canvas. Though she never sold any of these paintings, she captured images that are no longer with us due to the continuing development in Campbell County. In her later years, she stopped painting and pursued a career in real estate.

She is survived by her husband, Deac; daughters Kathy Yelton (Rudiger Wolfe) and Laura (J.B.) Brown, both of Falmouth; and son Merritt Yelton of Cold Spring; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She requested no services and will be cremated.
