Col. Mathews Heart Victim in Georgia

Former Chaplain At Fort Here To Be Buried In Arlington

Col. Albert K. Mathews, 63, retired Army Chaplain who formerly served at Fort McClellan, died in Atlanta yesterday.   He apparently died of a heart attack following a minor traffic collision of his car with another.  He was dead on arrival at a hospital, though he suffered no injuries.

           Rector At Cartersville

Colonel Mathews was rector of Ascension Episcopal Church at Cartersville, GA.  He resided in Atlanta.  Police said the Mathews automobile struck the rear of another car.  Mrs. Mathews was treated for head injuries and shock, and an occupant of another car for injuries to one arm.  The colonel served during both world wars and the period between.  He was chaplain at Fort McClellan from 1933 to 1938 and had many friends in Anniston and Jacksonville.

          Returning To Atlanta

At the time of the accident yesterday he was returning to Atlanta after conducting services at his Cartersville church, where he had been rector for six years.  Colonel Mathews’ survivors include the widow, Mrs. Leona Lyen Mathews; three sons, Capt. Davis I. Mathews, U.S. Army; Capt. Joel  L. Mathews, U.S. Army retired, and C. McDowell Mathews of Anniston.  Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
