Union Soldiers Buried at Hope Landing
Contributed by Homer Mussleman
A monument marking the graves of Union
soldiers from the 107th New York Infantry was found by John Vance in the woods
along Aquia Creek. Twenty-three men from the 107th New York died at Hope Landing
during the winter of 1862-1863 and are thought to be buried there. After the
war, the men were re-interred at the National Cemetery in Fredericksburg. The
monument, made from Aquia sandstone, was given to the National Park Service and
is on display at Chatham. There was an article about the monument in the Free
Lance Star on Sept. 28, 1990. Noel Harrison, National Park Service, did the
research on the men buried there.
