Stevens Family Cemetery
Contributed by Homer Mussleman
Cemetery is located at the end of
Jumping Branch Road (Route #742.) The cemetery is very large, but there were
only five markers. The cemetery is surrounded by a chain link fence. Linwood
Stevens' grandparents are buried here. James E. Calvin, a Union soldier, was
shot and killed when he was on the roof of the house. Linwood erected the
tombstone at the request of one Calvin's descendants about 20 years ago.
UPDATE: 01/13/2009 by Stevens descendants Timothy & Norman Freeman
The family home still exists although we do not own it. It was used as a Union field hospital during the Civil War. These are the only markers with inscriptions but there are 34 other markers with no inscriptions unmarked graves. It is difficult to tell how many are actually buried as some of the markers are close together. I was told that it was the custom to put a stone at the head and foot. Some could also be marking the grave of a child. We can only speculate.. I have recently been replacing all markers with new granite markers as some graves had only rocks; others concrete markers which were deteriorating.
