NEGRO SLAVE OWNERS OF OVERWHARTON PARISH
The Register abounds with recordings of the births of baptism of Negro slaves. This seems to have been required in order that their owners could be taxed when the slaves came to proper age to be tithables. Below are listed the names of the slave owners; the date following the name indicates the first year that a person had a slave born or baptized in Overwharton Parish. Consistent with the rest of the Register, the recordings relative to Negro slaves are very sparse prior to 1738.
