Posted 01/23/2008  Surname: Levell

I am looking for information about my great, great, great grandfather, whose name was James Levell. We know from U.S. Census records that he lived in Gallatin County from at least 1830 to 1860. We also know from these records that he was born in Kentucky in 1807. He was married to a woman
whose maiden name was Agnes Cox. We know nothing regarding James' or Agnes' parents. They had at least six children, among them my great, great grandfather Andrew Anderson Levell. Our family's oral history says that James Levell was shot and killed about 1860 in a family argument by
a man named Charles Tandy, brother of Andrew Levell's wife. It is probable that James Levell's death occurred in Gallatin County in 1860. Would like to know if there could possibly be records or newspaper accounts that would provide additional information about his parents.  His oldest son, John J. Levell, died in Gallatin County on April 4, 1870, so we know the family ties to Gallatin County continued beyond his death. Can you offer any suggestions as to how I might try to research his death, i.e. newspaper accounts, police records, etc., or where I might look for burial records? Any help would be appreciated.Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Doug LaVelle, douglavelle@aol.com

Posted 06/06/2007 Subject: Photo/Info on Gallatin Co. Cannery

Does anyone have any information and pictures of the Gallatin County Cannery. The cannery was located behind the old high school in what later in about 53-54 became the music department. It was a modern cannery for the day. It contained a hot pack line where the individual doing the canning placed their green beans in 28 oz cans. The cans then traveled down  the line where they were blanched with steam and the cans sealed. There were 4 pressure cookers each able to hold a about 100 cans. The last person to use the cannery was a lady named Mrs. Harmon in 1951. She canned about 100 cans of tomatoes and a couple hundred cans of green beans. Mrs. Harmon worked in the school cafeteria for many years. Any help would be greatly appreciated, David Webb, edewebb@msn.com

Matilda is a mystery.  In the first two Swango books she is listed as "Matilda Martin",but her marriage certificate shows her as Matilda Hicks.  Interestingly, she and Moses had a son named Msrtin.  Perhaps Moses was her second husband as she was ten years older than Moses.  Possibly her real maiden name was Martin.  I am looking for her parents in hopes of finding a Revolutionary War Patriot. I am a descendant of Urial Piercefield who married Catherine Collins (dau. of Bartlett and Judith Leonard Collins) on Sept. 13, 1839 in Grant County, KY.  Urial's name is spelled a variety of ways from Rial, Ryal, Royal, etc. I cannot find them on the 1840 census, but in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 they are in Grant or Pendleton County, the last known location on 1880 census for Pendleton County, 5th Magistrate District next door to his oldest son Bartlett and Eunice Dennis Piercefield.  Urial aged strangely; in 1850 he is 28, in 1860 in Demossville he is 39, in 1870 still in Demossville he is 49 but in 1880 he is 67.  I cannot find Urial or Catherine in 1900 census.  I cannot find a burial or death certificate.  Many years they lived next to son, Bartlett but they are not buried there Pleasant Ridge.

Can anyone help me find Urial and Catherine at the time of their death or when they are first married?  They are not with Catherine's mother in 1840 either. Any help will be appreciated,

Posted 1/22/2006 Surnames: RALSTON

I have always been told that my Ralston line can be located in Gallatin Co KY.  I have not found this to be true. I descend from John Ralston and Sarah Brenton Ralston. John being born 1803 in Westmoreland Co, PA near Hannastown.  Sarah was born ca. 1810 in Nicholas Co KY.  They married Aug. 21, 1827 in Nicholas Co KY and had 13 Children.  This family after the death of Sarah's step-father, William Hopkins died, they removed to Boone Co IN. for a few years.  IN the spring of 1855 they removed to Trimble Co KY and remained there until John's death in 1872-75. He is buried in the Ralston Cemetery on Morton's Ridge in Trimble Co Ky.  Sarah, however, was alive in 1880 and was in the household of her younger son, Richard, in Trimble Co KY.  Richard and his family had moved to Stoddard Co Mo around 1881.  I do not know if Sarah had died and then Richard moved, or if Sarah went with him.  Richard had a sister, Livonia Ralston, born 1837 in KY, who was listed in each census as being deaf and dumb, insane, a pauper.  In the court records of Oldham co KY  a jury of 12 men found Livonia to be insane and not physically or mental capable of caring for herself.  A yearly sum was appointed to a William Morgan who was her brother in law to care for her.  However, never have I located Livonia living in the household of Mr. Morgan.  So, Livonia just disappeared.  I do not know if she went with Richard to Mo.  She is not listed in Richard's wife's (Rosa) household.  Richard died between 1881-1900 as he is not listed in the 1900 census with Rosa.  Sarah was living in 1880 and at the time Livonia's court appearance.  I have been wondering for 25 years what happened to Sarah and Livonia. I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the Ralston/Rolston family that may have been in Gallatin Co before maybe going into Nicholas Co Ky.   The mystery continues. Any help with this line will be appreciated, Sue Reid sueralston@insightbb.com

I am searching for information on William Eaton family..
My information shows William Eaton (1773-1817) came to Gallatin Co Ky with his wife Nancy Ann Bryan sometime after their May 19, 1793 marriage in Frederich  MD. William died June of 1817 in Gallatin Co. Some time later, Nancy migrated to Indiana. It appears some of the children went with her. There were 12 children and some were adults by the time their father died and may have stayed in KY. I am interested in information on any of the family. Listed below are the children

John b.1794
Samuel b.1796
James b.1797
Nancy b.1800
William Jr. b.1801
Mary b. 1802
Millie b.1804
Blewford b.1809 (I have seen different spelling)
Malinda b.1810
Greenup b.1813 (settled in Brownsburg IN)
Josian Osa b 1814
Charles b. 1816 (my connection-died in IN)

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Barney Eaton barney@texas.net

I would like to find information on Barnett Noel born 1793 who married Sally Jones, John Noel bn 1783 who married Frankie Maddox and then Elizabeth Brock, and Phillip Noel bn 1805 who married Elizabeth Yeager.  I feel that they are related or connected somehow and would appreciate any help you can give me to help me make the connection. They possibly could be related to the Noel family from South Holland, Netherlands who migrated to Essex Co., Va., but I have not been able to make that connection. I appreciate any information or help you give me. Thank you so very much, Wilda whatcher5c@radiks.net

Perhaps someone can give me some advice.  My gg Grandfather was John Glenn and I am trying to find his birthplace and parents name.  I know some things for sure.  He was born 26 Oct 1797.  He says in census, Ohio. His children say Kentucky. He fought in the War of 1812 as a substitute for a Mr Joseph McCann.  He enlisted in Louisville and served as Pvt in Capt Holt's Co KY Militia  10 Nov 1814 -10 May 1815.  He was discharged in Gallatin County, on 10 May 1815.
(Bill Davis wrote.. There was a Joseph McCann in Gallatin County (now Carroll County).  In 1799  a John Glenn was a witness to a deed of Martin Hawkins to Christina McNair, Gallatin Deed Book A-1, page 130.  Perhaps this Glenn was the father of your John Glenn.) Any help would really be appreciated! Dean Glenn dglenn@hal-pc.org

Any suggestions on how to get any more information on this family.  It has two basic connections.  A whole lot more than I have ever come across.  John Glenn, the son that served in the War of 1812 was discharged in Gallatin County May 10, 1815.  The additional clue is that Joseph McCann was also there at one time. I appreciate your help. This is really my "Brick Wall". Thanks, Dean Glenn dglenn@hal-pc.org

I've "rescued" the original marriage affidavit and certificate for Elijah SWANGO and his bride Mary Ellen WALTERS both of Gallatin County, Kentucky who were married on the 2nd of January 1868 at the home of Oliver HAMILTON. The officiating minister was Benjamin TILLER and the witnesses were Oliver HAMILTON, F.M. GRAHAM, Patrick WELDON, and Harrison FURNISH. I'm hoping to be able to locate someone from the family so that these precious items can be returned to their rightful place with family.  If you
are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks,

My great great grandfather, John Glenn served in the War of 1812 as a substitute for Joseph Mc Cann.  He enlisted in Bear Grass (now Louisville, Ky) October 4, 1814 and discharged on May 10, 1815 in Gallatin Co KY.  He was born in Ohio according to two census.  He was married in Switzerland county, Indiana.  What makes this difficult is the boundaries at that time. Involved was the state of Ohio, the Indiana Gore triangle, and Indiana. I would appreciate it if someone could suggest documents or resources that may determine John's birthplace and parents? Thanks, Dean Glenn dglenn@hal-pc.org
