The Pendleton Circuit Court
We learn that during
the sitting of the Pendleton Circuit Court last
week, a man named Clarke Wolfe, was sentenced to
the Penitentiary, for a term of ten years,
charged with committing a rape upon the person
of his step daughter, a child under ten years of
age, and who, at the time the outrage was first
committed, was but little over seven years of
age. The principle evidence was that of the
little girl herself, who stated the brute had
made the first attempt on her person more than
two years ago, and that it was frequently
repeated during a period of eighteen months. The
matter was first brought to light, by a young
lady, who resided in the family, coming upon him
whilst he was making one of his brutish attacks
on the little girl. The scoundrel deserves
hanging and it speaks well for the law-abiding
spirit of the people of Pendleton that they did
not hang him “without Judge or Jury.”
Another chap was also
sent for a term of four years, for horse
stealing. Several other felony cases were
continued until next term of the court, when, we
presume, a new batch of recruits will be sent to
Zeb Ward’s barracks.

NOTE: These records have been transcribed from several different sources, either by us or by other researchers and provided as a starting point to assist you in your research; we've verified as many as we could, but be aware that there may be errors (either mis-spellings on the original records, almost illegible writing on the records, and/or typing errors on my part), so make sure to double check them prior to assuming they're "the gospel truth". We will never deliberately include erroneous information in any part of this site.
These records have not been copied by either of this site's coordinators from
other sites, as has been implied by some. Sources have included records from
the E. E. Barton research files, military records, newspapers, microfilm and/or
compiled lists that were provided by family members and other researchers.
The majority of the additions to the marriage index pages on 17 and 30 Jun
2007 were transcribed from FHC microfilm #973027.
