Arthur Nathan Davis & Eliza Ann Newman

Including Eliza Davis' marriage to William Marshall Blackwell.

Arthur Nathan “Att” Davis, born 12 March 1823, Carthage, Smith Co., TN. A possible first, childless marriage to Frances Brown on 4 February 1845 in Wilson Co., TN. Married (2?) on 19 November 1847 at Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., KY, to Eliza[beth] Ann Newman. She was born 1825 at Greenville, daughter of Thomas Newman and his wife Malinda Caroline “Lenny” Welborn, and died around 1889 in Augusta, Butler Co., KS.

He served in Colonel David Allison's regiment in the Mexican War, and was Captain of Company D, Third Kentucky Cavalry in the Civil War. He was wounded very early, imprisoned without treatment, then discharged in April 1863. He died of his injuries and a falling branch at Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., KY, on 9 March 1868. Buried on his farm near Greenville.

The widow remarried in 1870 to a much older neighbor, William Marshall Blackwell (born 1801, NC), and they had one further child. Blackwell abandoned the family for some period, and this is raised in a lawsuit over the estate of Samuel, #6 below.

  1. Susan Adeline “Addie” Davis, born 16 October 1848, Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., KY. Married 16 September 1866, Jesse Johnston. Died 18 March 1920. Both are buried at the Tecumseh Mission Cemetery, Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma.

  2. Mary Frances “Fanny” Davis, born 10 January 1850, Greenville, KY. Married 16 September 1866, Alphus A. Johnston, brother of Jesse Johnston. Settled Oklahoma City, OK; died 1925.
  3. Catherine Casander Jane “Lenny” Davis, born 21 November 1851, Greenville, KY. Married 15 December 1867, David Preston James, died 7 June 1905 in Oklahoma.
  4. Britton Alexander Davis, born 15 September 1858, Greenville, KY. Married 11 February 1880, Richland, Shawnee Co., KS, Leonora Estella Woody. A minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died of a combination of tuberculosis and pneumonia at Wichita, KS, on 10 July 1896, and is buried in the Potts Cemetery, Rose Hill, KS. She died on 1 August 1943 at Tarzana, CA, and is buried at the Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Los Angeles Co., CA.
  5. Ann Eliza Davis, born about 1861, Greenville, KY. Married (1) at age 13, in 1874, William Crawford Cornett, (2) J.W. Brown of Great Bend, KS. She died in childbirth 1892.
  6. Samuel G. Davis, born 9 November 1867, Greenville, KY. Died 3 September 1881 in Augusta, KS. Buried Calvary Cemetery, Augusta, KS. No issue.
