Biographical note: Timothy Downing Humphrey came to Muhlenberg County about 1830 and settled on Cypress Creek in the area around the present site of Cherry Hill Baptist Church. He built a home near the mouth of the Cherry Hill mine. Timothy had a few relatives already in Muhlenberg County: his brother Richard E. Humphrey, born 7 Mar 1817 in Ohio County, Kentucky; and his cousin Raleigh Ellison Humphrey, born 29 Aug 1824 in Washington County, Kentucky.

By trade Timothy was a farmer who owned several hundred acres of land. His sons Ivy W., Timothy Jr., and John Edmond Reno Humphrey were all members of Cherry Hill Baptist Church. According to family tradition, Timothy and his wife Matilda were buried at Coleman Cemetery in Muhlenberg County, though no gravestones have been located.
