Declaration

In order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress of the 7th of June 1832

County of Logan }
On this 28th day of December 1840, personally appeared before the County Court of Logan County in the State of Kentucky, John Mefford a resident of the County of Logan and State of Kentucky aged Seventy six years on the 8th day of October last, who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on is oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress pass June 7th 1832. That he [en]listed in the army as a substitute for his father Gasper Mefford in the year in which Cornwallis was taken__ in the spring of that year and he went out either on the ninth of May or June he does not remember which but inclines to think it was June - with George Auston as captain__ Guy Hamilton was the Major and a man by the name of Harris or Harrison was the Colonel__ The Lieutenant of the company was Christian Cuggar who took sick & Thomas Lewis was made Lieutenant in his place. A man by the name of Campbell was called a general and commanded the troops also Anthony Wagner who was also a general - And Marcus or Margriss who in command of the troops at a little scrimmage at Jamestown - That he was in the regular service about two months and he was sent home and got his discharge about four months after he first entered the service- he served for only one term of enlistment for which time his father was drafted, and he served afterward as a minute man in guarding prisoners, recollects that he guarded some prisoners taken by Morgan and sent to Winchester.

He lived in the county of Rockingham in the State of Virginia when he entered the service. His company started from Rockingham County went cross Swift run gap - and the next place he remember was Richmond - thinks he went from Richmond to Petersburg but will not be certain. His recollection is that the next place he marched to was Jamestown where there was an engagement between about two hundred of the American troops and as many of the British and his company in which he was in active service took part in the engagement__ Nine days after he was in another engagement at a place called Hot Water he does not Known whether this name was given to the place by the soldiers or not. General Wagner commanded at Jamestown during the ____ of the engagement & he does not remember who commanded at Hot Water but always thought a Col. from Augusta County named Boyers. He marched between Richmond and Jamestown several times and started once to go to Norfolk but did not get there. The captain was discharged about 16 miles below Richmond as he thinks and the Captain did not discharge his men till after they reached home - He states that he has lost his discharge.

He hereby relinquished every claim whatever to a pension or any annuity except the present & he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of any agency in any state__

And the Said Court do hereby declare their opinion that the above applicant was a revolutionary Solider, and served as he States.

Note: John Mefford was the son of Gasper [or Casper] Mefford, whose descendants live in Muhlenberg and Logan Counties.
